desertSMART EcoFair 2015 wins National Science Week Grant

desertSMART EcoFair has been named as one of 20 national recipients of National Science Week grant funding announced by Minister for Industry and Science, Ian Macfarlane, last week.

The desertSMART EcoFair is Central Australia’s premier sustainability and science event connecting thousands of people to science and sustainability in Alice Springs since 2009. The EcoFair is a 3-day sustainable living festival which connects science to the realities of living sustainably in the arid lands. In 2015, the EcoFair will build on previous events to combine all elements of desertSMART –exploring options for energy, water, waste, food, transport and planning in the arid lands; connecting with the international year of soil and light.

“We are very pleased to officially announce that desertSMART EcoFair has won $20,000 in funding from National Science Week and to confirm that the EcoFair will be going ahead again this year over the weekend of 7th-9th August at the Olive Pink Botanic Gardens,” said Jimmy Cocking Director of the Arid Lands Environment Centre.

Due to the reduced capacity of organizing body, Arid Lands Environment Centre, as a result of funding cuts last year, the EcoFair program will be more compact in 2015 however will still contain popular events Eco-Science Schools Day, the Alice Springs Bicycle Film Festival and the Sunday Eco-markets and Sustainable Living Festival.

“desertSMART EcoFair is all about learning, sharing and creating community discussion around science and sustainability,” said Mr Cocking. “This year we will be continuing that discussion with leading science presenters, workshops, panels and the sustainable living festival as well as welcoming back some long term event supporters, like desertSMART EcoFair Ambassador Costa Georgiadis”.
